How YouTube Actually Stores Audio

YouTube never stores MP3 files on its servers. When a creator uploads a video, YouTube splits the video and audio into separate streams. The platform encodes the audio into two formats:

  • Opus (itag 251): Typically encoded between 130kbps and 160kbps VBR (Variable Bitrate) with a 48kHz sampling rate. Opus delivers high fidelity at lower bitrates, retaining frequencies up to 20kHz.
  • AAC (itag 140): Typically encoded at 128kbps CBR (Constant Bitrate) with a 44.1kHz sampling rate in an M4A container.

Because YouTube uses Opus and AAC containers, converting to MP3 requires careful decoding. Poor conversion utilities decode the stream, compress it to 96kbps or 128kbps, and slap a fake 320kbps header on the file. That results in loss of high-frequency detail above 16kHz.
